The Peter Chase Award: Andrew Turner

The Peter Chase Award gives financial support to talented young musicians in Sowerby Music’s catchment area.

• March 2006 Andy was awarded his Dip.ABRSM in French Horn Performance with a high distinction (and one of the highest marks ever awarded).
• March 2006: played 1st Horn with Chetham's Chamber Orchestra in performances of Mozart's piano concertos 6 and 8 as part of the Mozart 250th anniversary celebrations broadcast on Radio 3 from the Bridgewater Hall.
• August 2006: participated in a staged performance of Berio's wind quintet Opus Number Zoo at Chamber Music International with a group of NY0 Principals (including Mark Simpson).
• October 2006: played 1st Horn (on the Natural Horn) in Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Haydn's Creation under Paul McCreesh.
• Autumn 2006: appeared as guest Principal Horn with Young Sinfonia in a number of concerts at Carlisle Cathedral and The Sage.
• November 2006: was invited by the Manchester Beethoven Orchestra to play solo 1st horn in a performance of Schumann's Konzertstuck for 4 solo horns and orchestra. It is notoriously difficult and high to play.
• In 2006: Andy was 3rd horn of the National Youth Orchestra of GB. This culminated in an appearance at the Proms under the baton of Sir Colin Davis televised live on BBC 2 where he played 1st horn in Stravinsky's Symphony in 3 movements.
• November 2006: was appointed Principal Horn of the National Youth Orchestra for 2007. At 15 he is their youngest Principal. During the year he will be working under Richard Hickox, Neville Marriner and Mark Elder.
• July 2007: Andy will be joining a trip to Southern Ireland with Chetham's Wind Band as part of the 2007 WASBE conference and in August he will be travelling to Ischia in Italy as a member of Chetham's Chamber Orchestra to give concerts at Lady Walton's request at the rooftop theatre in the grounds of her residence.
